When an existing building is changing from a lighter covering to natural slate, structural suitability may need project-specific assessment. This is not something that can be determined from the street or by applying a generic load calculation.
Roof pitch also affects water shedding, exposure and installation approach. The selected fastening method must hold individual slates without preventing a durable repair detail, and flashing must be coordinated with the actual roof geometry.
Routine repair or replacement of an existing roof covering does not automatically mean a standard building permit is required. The scope and property conditions matter.

Natural slate is quarried stone with distinctive grain, texture and weathering characteristics.
